Unbelievably, it is two-and-a-half years since we moved to the wetly sunny Devon for a major lifestyle change. I can still be caught saying, “Oh, we’re a long way from Kansas, Toto!” to misquote the late, great Judy Garland, as I adjust to rural life.

A major element of this change has been moving away from the 40+ hours per week full time work to part time, to allow me greater flexibility to write as well as covering off household stuff so that our weekends are free for enjoying our new surroundings. I duly set up my VA business, but knew I would need some part-time employed work to keep the wolf from the door. After 6 months at an amazing local school as their Receptionist, the miracle of a part-time EA job came up two years ago. The resident EA was winding down her hours in readiness for retirement and needed someone to effectively job-share the role. Originally a one-year contract, it has twice been extended, but now my colleague – and new friend’s – retirement is imminent so it was time for me to say goodbye as well. We will leave our role in the capable hands of a highly experienced EA already working in the sector.
When at last my final day came, I was blown away by the send-off I received. Flowers, hugs, lovely messages and a jolly lunch at a local café, and then I handed in laptop, ancillaries and badge and drove tearfully home. Being part-time and hybrid, it had taken me longer than usual to be part of the team, and I was touched to discover how loved I am. Fortunately it’s not an absolute goodbye; there is some piecework elsewhere in the organisation that I will continue to do for them in the years go come.
So that all leaves me with more time and flexibility to focus on my VA clients. If you would like to be one of them, do get in touch via my Contact page.
