So it seems I can’t do it all…

I had some great New Year Intentions, but instead I’m being taught the “Managing My Energy” lesson.

Just before Christmas, I was all sorted for a productive week off, with glorious free days when I could go for walks with my husband, clear down my personal correspondence and admin, and ready myself for a sparkling fresh start on Monday 2nd Jan.

And then… I caught one of the many vicious flu type bugs doing the rounds. I managed to get to my mum’s for Christmas but all the long winter walks went out of the window, instead of me going out of the door. I got frustrated and grouchy but New Year’s Eve saw me well enough to welcome two close friends for a very chilled out get together and, after resting up on Bank Holiday Monday, I was back at work on Tuesday. I’d won! Bring on the To Do List! But hark, what is that? My body asking me to rest when I can? OK! I’m doing it! I’ve learned. Well done me! Bring on theTo Do List when I’m 100% again next week! Except…

The first weekend of the year brought me a second dose of the lurgy. After a Sunday spent dozing in front of the TV on the sofa, I do feel much perkier this Monday morning and the temptation is to jump out of bed and start tacking it all. But I know Feeling Better Than Yesterday is not the same as Being Well. And I have an added incentive for being wise: I have plans later in the week that it would break my heart to miss. So I’m resting up, but more constructively than yesterday.

A friend gave me this handy tip: aim each day to cover off 3 things on the To Do List, no more. You will likely end up doing more but, as the To Do List is by nature endless, this way, you will be undaunted and will have a sense of achievement at the end of each day. I started to apply it before Christmas and it worked.

So you are reading the result of Item 1. Blogging more regularly was one of my 2023 intentions so this post goes towards that goal as well. Item 2 is to put on a darks wash and Item 3 is to start clearing down my personal correspondence, neglected in the lost days at Christmas. Wish me well, and a Happy New Year to all.
