No, I’m not branching out into match-making. But I have been reflecting on how much of life satisfaction depends simply on how you fit, be it in your primary relationship, your friendships and families or the organisations you serve
A key match for any business owner, director or executive is to find that person who can truly become their right hand. I love the feedback, “what did I do before you came here?” or “I couldn’t do my job well without you.” I don’t take it personally, it’s nice but not a basis for thinking I’m the best PA ever. But what I do take from it is, “Yeay! we fit!” Such a fit is based on mutual trust and learning how each other thinks. Thus an Exec can say to a temporarily overworked senior manager, “I’ll see if my PA can find some time to support you” confident that they will. An Exec can say to their EA, “I need to design a project/write a report on xyz, it needs to cover this that and the other” and the EA can scope it all out for them to play with, saving them masses of time. And the EA can say to the senior manager urgently needing an unavailable Exec’s advice, “I’m afraid they’re not available but, from what you’ve said, I’m confident they would tell you to…”.
It takes time to find the person who suits you, and time to develop the fit. But it is worth persevering. If you need support and don’t know where to start, just get in touch and see if it’s me!
