Nearly 20 years ago I made a new friend who changed my world. Almost a year after looking him up and down and ruling out romance, we began dating. I took him to a favourite place of mine, Upton House near Banbury, and there in the gardens he spotted a treecreeper. I had no idea such a bird even existed and I was enchanted as it scuttled up a tree trunk like a mouse. Little did I know what I had awoken in my friend: he had been a teenage birder. All the old books came out, and I was introduced to a whole new way of seeing the world.
Hidden among the feet of the cows in the picture above – too small for my phone camera to pick up – are about 20 yellow wagtails. These charming birds flock around cattle to feed on the small flies that inevitably accompany the herd, particularly on a hot sunny day like this. They are fed and the cows – well, bullocks in this case – get a more comfortable life where they can focus on grazing instead of dealing with what could be a major distraction. At one point on Monday, as I watched this scene, a wagtail stood up, its golden belly proud in the sun, facing the mighty herd in front of it, unfazed, confident, and utterly in charge of its world.
That’s what your administrators are: golden people who are consuming the jobs that, if left unchecked, would become a major irritation with the potential to send your business into a spin – or stampede. They stand in front of your organisation, calm, confident, unfazed, helping you to identify what needs to be done and then getting on and doing it, while you focus on what keeps you healthy and fed.
If you can’t, for whatever reason, develop an entire flock of administrators at your business, how about tapping into the world of the virtual assistants? We can pick up all those jobs that may seem small but without which your organisation would soon grind to a distracted halt. If that sounds like the solution for you, just get in touch. And hopefully I can make your world a brighter place.
