I took the picture above walking across the seabed of the shallow channel between St Mary’s and Tresco on the Isles of Scilly. Several times a year the tide is low enough to walk across. I had longed to do this ever since I found out it was possible and the opportunity came unexpectedly. I was walking a path that had been walked by people since ancient times, since before it was covered by the sea. Stone age, iron age, bronze age, industrial age, computer age, space age. Walking to find sustenance, walking to get somewhere, walking just for the joy of it. Walking alone, walking in conversation, walking in sorrow, in boredom, in joy.
This moment was magical in itself. I set out to walk alone and in bare feet, because I had not expected the opportunity when it came. But that didn’t stop me. It was an experience worth having in itself, but it was made even more special when I fell into step with a woman and in a short space of time we shared our lives and made a profound connection. I love chance connections like this, so I’m glad my lack of appropriate footwear didn’t stop me.
